THE RUNDOWN
You have probably sat in a meeting where somebody announced an AI initiative, and then watched nothing visibly happen for the next six months.
Accenture and Google Cloud just put a number on the reason. They are hiring 1,000 forward deployed engineers (FDE), which is the job title for the person who sits inside a company and gets an AI system actually running in the business.
We get into what that job is, what the postings require, and the certification window that closes at the end of this month.
Let's get into it.
Quick Signals
Your health plan is getting a bigger raise than you are. Mercer surveyed more than 1,800 employers and found benefit costs on track to rise 8.2% in 2027, the largest jump since 2003, against wage growth of about 3.1%. 59% of employers plan changes to their plans, and about two thirds of large employers expect to push more of the premium onto employees.
The market flipped from betting on a rate cut to betting on a hike. Prediction markets now put the odds of a 25 basis point increase at the September 15-16 Fed meeting between 59% and 68%, with the chance of a cut down around 1%. New Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole speech did most of that repricing.
Last year's job growth was worse than reported, again. The preliminary benchmark revision knocked 79,000 jobs off the year through March 2026, and 178,000 off private payrolls. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg had expected a revision up of 183,000, and this is the seventh downward revision in eight years.
AI tutoring works right up until you take the AI away. A Wharton experiment with about 1,000 high school students found the ones using GPT-4 performed 48% better while they had it, then scored 17% worse on a test once it was gone. Atlassian's 2026 survey found executives are 84% more likely to fund new technology than to fund teaching their teams to use it.
Retail is walking into holiday hiring season without much momentum. Indeed Hiring Lab's latest read finds retail postings still drifting down, hiring activity thin, and very little movement between employers inside the sector. Seasonal work has been one of the more reliable on-ramps back into the workforce, and this year it looks smaller.
Opportunity Flow
Funding
XDOF, three months out of stealth, is in talks for a Series B at a $1.2 billion valuation. Companies moving that fast hire ahead of the round closing.
Instinct raised $350 million at a $2.5 billion valuation after a consumer launch that went viral.
Robotics startup Generalist reached a $3 billion valuation, according to people familiar with the round.
Contracts
Northrop Grumman won $508 million for missile defense flight test and logistics support running through 2035.
Huntington Ingalls received $336 million in advance procurement for the carrier CVN 82, which means shipyard and supplier hiring for the next decade.
Pentaq Manufacturing landed a $763 million five-year contract to supply the military's physical fitness gear.

The Big Story
Accenture is hiring 1,000 forward deployed engineers
Accenture and Google Cloud announced a new Gemini Enterprise Business Group on Monday, and the headline is a staffing plan. They are standing up a 1,000-person forward deployed engineering workforce. A forward deployed engineer sits inside a client's business, learns how the work actually gets done there, and then builds and ships the AI system that takes over part of it.
Accenture is also expanding Gemini training across its nearly 50,000 Google Cloud-skilled professionals. That is the part worth pausing on, because those people are already on the payroll.
There is a proof point attached, which is rarer than it should be for announcements like this. YouTube ran a Gemini Enterprise agent through the NFL Sunday Ticket demand surge and cut average handling time by 37% while customer sentiment improved 11%.
This is the third large forward deployed build-out in five months, after OpenAI's in May and AWS's in July. What is different is where the people are coming from.
The first two went out and hired engineers. This one starts by retraining people who already sit inside a consultancy, which tells you which half of the job is actually scarce.
The technology is not the bottleneck. Knowing a company's claims process, or its onboarding flow, or its escalation rules well enough to redesign the thing and then ship the redesign is the bottleneck.
That is also why so much of this work keeps landing at consultancies instead of at the model companies. Whoever owns the model, somebody still has to sit with an operations team for eleven weeks and find out why the exception queue exists in the first place.
Why it matters: the fastest-growing job in AI right now is not building the model or even using it. It is standing between a business process and a system and being accountable for the outcome. That is a consulting skill with an engineering requirement bolted onto it, and the two halves rarely live in the same person, which is most of why it pays what it pays. If you already have the process half, the technical half is a much shorter gap to close than it looks from outside.
Making Moves
What it takes to become a forward deployed engineer
The postings are far more specific than the job title suggests, and more reachable than most people assume. Palantir's forward deployed software engineer role asks for one year of professional experience, working fluency in Python, Java, C++ or TypeScript, and willingness to travel about 25% of the time, at $135,000 to $200,000.
The consulting versions ask for more. Deloitte's Palantir forward deployed engineer posting wants three years in software, data or analytics, one year shipping generative AI into production, one year leading project workstreams, and 50% travel.
Read the two lists side by side and the shape of the job is obvious. About half of every requirement is technical, and the other half is running a room: engaging senior stakeholders, leading working sessions, and turning a vague business complaint into something a system can actually do.
If you already have that second half, these are the shortest routes through the first.
Google Cloud Generative AI Leader. $99, 90 minutes, no prerequisites and no coding on the exam. It is the business-level credential, and it is the base layer under the population Accenture is now retraining.
Google Cloud Professional Agentic Architect, currently in beta. $120 instead of the $200 retail price until September 30, three hours, about 80 questions, built directly on the Gemini Enterprise agent platform. There are no hard prerequisites, though the recommended background is three years of cloud work and a year of building agents.
The free tier, if you want to test your interest before spending anything. Google's Agentic Architect learning path is 13 courses, labs and skill badges at no cost, and Anthropic's Claude Academy runs free courses including a four-hour AI fluency course and a 45-minute one on building human and agent teams.
Why it matters: the certificate is not what gets you hired, a delivery record is. What the certificate does is get you past the resume filter and give you enough vocabulary to hold your own in the room, which for someone with a consulting, operations or process background is usually the only missing piece. The Agentic Architect beta window closes September 30 and a beta pass is good for a year, so if you were going to do it, this is the month it is cheapest.

Find out what your health plan actually costs you before open enrollment
Most people pick a plan by looking at the premium, which is the one number that hides the most. This prompt does the arithmetic the benefits portal will not do for you. Paste it into Claude or ChatGPT:
You are a benefits analyst. I want to know the true annual cost of my
health plan options, not the premium.
My situation: [ages of everyone covered, any regular prescriptions, any
planned procedures, typical doctor visits per year]
Plan options: [for each: monthly premium, deductible, out-of-pocket max,
coinsurance, copays, HSA or FSA eligibility and any employer contribution]
Do this in order:
1. Model my total annual cost for each plan in three scenarios: a healthy
year, a normal year, and one bad event like surgery or an ER visit.
Show premium and expected out-of-pocket separately.
2. Tell me which plan wins in each scenario, and at what level of spending
the ranking flips.
3. Factor in the HSA tax advantage if one is offered, and say plainly
whether it changes the answer or not.
4. List the five questions I should ask my benefits team, based on
whatever is missing or ambiguous in what I gave you.Run it once on this year's numbers before the new packet arrives. When it lands, you will be able to see exactly what changed instead of taking the summary page's word for it.

Two polls are still open, one on Oracle's quarter and one on August inflation. Both land this week, so we will settle them Monday.
The Fed meets September 15-16, and markets have swung from expecting a cut to pricing in a hike. What does the committee do?
Raise rates by 25 basis points
Hold steady where they are
Cut rates after all
